Basic Travel Guidelines
Travel planning and preparation is essential to making sure that your next trip goes smoothly and is the fun, relaxing, rejuvenating holiday of your dreams. Of course, your particular trip planning and preparation will depend on your travel destination and your holiday itinerary; however, these general travel guidelines offer some tips and advice that will help you get the most from their holiday, regardless of your travel plans.
Passports – Apply for passports for you and your children as soon as you begin to consider international travel. Depending on your country’s application process, obtaining a passport can take anywhere between a few days and several weeks. The process is generally simple, but this is an essential travel tool that you will want to take care of right away.
Visas – Once you have established which countries you will visit on your international holiday, you will need to find out if visitor visas are necessary for tourists. For example, if you are traveling to Australia, you will likely need an ETA or eVisitor, each of which can be easily applied for online. If you are working through a travel agent, your agent will be able to provide this information and assist you with the application process. Alternatively, each country will have a government or travel portal website with this information.
Vaccinations/Immunizations – Depending on your travel plans, vaccines may be required or recommended. This information is available online through governmental agencies. For example, United States residents can visit the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) website, which provides information about vaccines that are categorized as routine, recommended and required.
Health Insurance – Before you travel, contact your health insurance provider to confirm that you will be covered during international travel. Also ask about any restrictions or limits to coverage while you are out of the country.
Safety – When partaking in an international holiday, it is always best to first gain an understanding of any safety issues that may arise. While international travel occurs every day and there are rarely serious safety issues while on holiday, it is worth a quick review to ensure that you are aware of any possible dangers or safety issues in the countries you plan to visit.
Weather – Research the typical weather and climate conditions in the countries you will be visiting to determine the best time of year for your holiday. Keep in mind that some countries have monsoon seasons or hurricane seasons that you may want to avoid. Also remember that the northern and southern hemispheres experience opposite seasons. This means that if it is winter in the UK, it is summer in Australia, and vice versa.
Culture and Language – Typically any cultural differences will only enhance your overall experience as you learn and share with the locals. Very few cultural issues should arise that cannot be easily managed; however, for example, if you plan to tour churches in Southern Europe, you may need to keep in mind that bare shoulders or shorts are not always allowed or appropriate. If you are concerned about language barriers, an inexpensive translation dictionary, or a common pictorial language helper that allows you to point to universally recognized pictures of food, restrooms, or hospitals should be all you need to communicate effectively.
Electronics – Voltage and electrical plugs vary between some countries. Small, inexpensive plug adaptors are readily available online, at travel stores and in airports. Converters may also be necessary depending on differences in voltage.
Hotels – Deciding the type and location of your accommodations can significantly impact your experience while on holiday. There are considerable differences between backpacking across the Australian Outback, staying in economy lodgings, and relaxing in luxury at a five star all-inclusive resort and spa. Keep in mind that different countries categorize lodgings using different standards, look online for reviews of the hotels you are considering to ensure that they will meet your needs and provide the type of accommodations you desire for your holiday. Also, look for half board or all-inclusive packages that may enhance your holiday and help you save money at the same time.
Following these basic travel guidelines and ensuring that you are well-prepared for your international holiday will allow you to enjoy your break without worrying about the logistics. Taking the time to cover your bases before you travel is essential to fully enjoying your holiday experience.
